Australia is an isolated country located between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean. The continent is almost the same size as the contiguous 48 states of the USA. With Canberra as its capital, Australias unique plant life, marine life, and wildlife make it an interesting tourist destination for those who can afford it. The low crime rate makes Australia an ideal place to enjoy a vacation without having to worry about personal security more than what is normally necessary. Outback exploration, Great Barrier Reef snorkeling, Fraser Island camping activities, and Uluru (Ayers Rock) sight seeing are among the many tourist attractions available in Australia. With the aforementioned things in mind, I will construct some useful travel tips and information for those planning on making it to the wild outback.

1.Travel Documentation If you are planning to enter Australia, you will need a valid tourist visa. Australian tourist visas can usually be obtained at your local Australian embassy or online, assuming that your current passport has not and will not expire during the time you plan on spending in the country. This visa is usually entered into your passport before you enter the country and is valid for 3 to 6 months.

2.Money Matters As is with most places that are modern and up to date, plastic can prove to be the best and most easy method of payment. Visa, MasterCard, and most ATM cards are accepted as long as they carry either the INTERLINK, MAESTRO, EUROCARD, CIRRUS, PLUS, or STAR international ATM mark. However, as a traveler please familiarize yourself with the fees or service charges that are involved with using your card at a foreign location; and yes they do have ATM machines in most major towns. If you plan on using travelers checks, please understand that you will more than likely be charged a fee or commission when exchanging them; because they are usually only cashable at banks and larger hotels and nowhere else. Changing foreign currency can be done at most banks or at the foreign exchange kiosks at the international airports.

3.Transportation A good way of getting around, is the nice little invention called the rent a car. Please make sure that you have an international drivers license if you plan on using a car rental and arent sure if your regular license will be accepted. Remember, all traffic drives on the left hand side of the road in Australia. If you plan on outback exploration that will require driving on roads that are not main roads, please thoroughly check that all things are working properly on your vehicle. Also, let someone know ahead of time the details of where you are going so that everybody can take the necessary emergency precautions if you do not return on time. And remember that in most country locations; animals sometimes congregate in the road, and quickly approaching head lights can easily confuse animals so that they will not know which way to go. So please be very careful.

4.The Sun and its Heat The sun in Australia can get very hot and carries high UV light levels so it can easily be compared to desert like conditions. It is illegal to leave animals or small children locked in vehicles while the whether is hot, this can also result in a fine being issued. It is a good practice to use SPF 30 or better sunscreen in these type of conditions to prevent damage.

5.Going Swimming – Whether it is the Great Barrier Reef, The Ningaloo Reef, or the Golden Surf; the beach and ocean is an integral part of Australian life and Australian tourism. Please be informed that there are poisonous and deadly creatures lerking in these waters such as the box jellyfish, coral snakes, stone fish, sharks, and many others that are known to cause death. It is wise to swim only in flagged areas that are near beaches that are regularly patrolled. Sometimes crocodiles swim in salt water when they are changing habitat, so it is a good idea to know what you could be up against. Heed all warning signs when they are seen. And remember that the Australian surf is rough and there are dangerous rip tides that are capable of making swimming difficult and deadly.

6.Important information to know If an ambulance, police, or fireman is needed then the number to dial is 000. North American electrical appliances will require an voltage converter adapter socket to work in Australia, because the Australian electrical supply is 240/250 volts compared to the North American 110/115 volts.

You are now ready for your journey to the wild outback and beyond. Please be safe in your travels.

A traveler to Australia might need a brief respite after arrival due to the distance it has taken to travel to the Continent. Some travelers might be groggy and feel out of sorts for a day or two because of the time differences involved, and the traveler might not be clear on what they are allowed to bring into the country and what is strictly prohibited. Plants and plant by-products require a quarantine period which might slow travelers down considerably.

The shopping hours throughout Australia are generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but in some locations, there are opportunities to shop on Saturday and Sunday and that choice is left up to the specific retailer. The customary enjoyment of tobacco while shopping is not tolerated in any store or restaurant and smoking on any type of public transportation or building is considered to be very unacceptable conduct.

There is a variety of transportation modes available throughout Australia. A traveler can get great bargains on bus tickets if they participate in discount card programs. There are terrific discounts for travelers with this type of membership because the discounts extend to tours at public buildings, amusement parks and arcades and many fine dining opportunities.

Visitors to Australia have free sightseeing trips that they can enjoy. While shopping Australia for many items, there are some tipping rules that will make the shopping go smoother. While dining with friends at lunch or dinner, it is customary to tip all servers and wait staff at least 10 percent of the final bill, and tip the people who help along the shopping path such as porters at hotels and taxi drivers who speed travelers to their next shopping destination.

Taking advantage of many travel discounts will be high on every travelers list. A visitor to Australia will have to be mindful of the time changes throughout the Continent that could have a direct effect on scheduling a vacation or a daily shopping excursion to other parts of the Continent that have not been visited yet. The time changes, in conjunction with the air travel fatigue, might overcome older travelers. It is always a good idea to keep the time factor, and time schedules for transportation and retail locations handy at all times.

When planning vacation trips to any foreign countries, there are many entry rules that will apply. In order to enter the Continent of Australia, travelers are required to have a valid passport on them at the point of entry, and some people run into difficulties because they do not have a visitor visa or student visa to present with the passport. The only exceptions to the two-document rule apply to natives of Australia and those that hold passports from New Zealand.

Duty-free shopping is encouraged at all major airports throughout the world. For travelers that plan to visit Australia, there are rules that apply to duty-free items that arrive with the passenger at the point of entry. Travelers must declare any foreign currencies that they enter Australia with, and remember to declare tobacco products too because there is a certain limit allowed for each person that travels. Age limits will apply to travelers who bring duty-free items into Australia too.

Do you want your Christmas holiday vacation to be full of warmth and fun under the sun?

How about a Christmas holiday vacation spent outdoors — barbequing, camping, or even in the beach or trekking the Outback — enjoying the warmth and clear blue skies of summer?

If yes, then spend your Christmas holiday vacation in the Land Down Under — Australia.

As Christmas in Australia comes in the first month of the southern summer, it would be a HOT

Christmas holiday vacation for you!

Enjoy touring Australia’s breathtaking diverse scenic spots — from the magical sunset of the orange to red to deep purple rocks of Uluru then to the dizzying 134-metreiconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and all the way down to the deep blue underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.

Spend your Christmas on Australia’s scenic golden sandy beaches in sub tropical settings, making your Christmas holiday vacation — adventurous, exciting, fun and hot!

All visitors to the Land Down Under is required any of the visas to travel to Australia.

As a holidaymaker, you are required to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa.

Australia’s Cutting Edge Entry System for Visitors

Getting an Australian Holiday Visa is so easy.

With the advent of new systems and technology — allowing Australia to develop the world’s most electronically sophisticated immigration entry system for visitors, the Land Down Under has now developed a cost-effective way and cutting edge entry system for visitors — which delivers a level of service consistent with the expectation of today’s travelers.

Removing the need for Australia travel visa paper application forms, Australia’s Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) — an Australia tourist visa subclass that is an electronically stored authority for travel to Australia for short-term visits or business entry — has replaced the traditional visa label or stamp in a passport and reduces the need for travellers to visit an Australian Embassy.

ETA Visa: A tourist visa for Australia

ETA Visa Requirements

Under the ETA, in order for the Australia holiday visa applicant to be eligible to apply for an ETA, they must:

be outside Australia when lodging the online travel visa to Australia application

hold a citizen passport of an ETA eligible country

have a valid credit card (American Express, Diners Club, JCB, MasterCard, or Visa)

How to apply for an ETA?

As an ETA is equivalent to a visa, there is no need for the holiday visa Australia applicants to visit an Australian diplomatic office to submit an application. They can apply for an ETA either:

through a travel agent, airline or visa specialist service provider arranging an ETA on their behalf

at an Australian visa office outside Australia

How does ETA Visa Works?

The ETA is issued electronically by a computer system operated for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) of Australia. You are advised to apply for your ETA at least two weeks before your proposed date of travel.

In lodging the ETA application, all you need to do is enter the details from your passport and your credit card information. However, take note that as your ETA is linked to the passport number you used in your application, you must use the same passport to travel to Australia.

Once the application is lodge, it is processed immediately and would only take less than 30 seconds — or in a small number of cases, you will need to check back in 12 hours to confirm whether your application has been successful.

When you arrive at an airport for check-in on a flight to Australia, the airline check-in staff can electronically confirm that you have authority to board the flight to Australia.

Australia holiday visa allows you to stay for up to three months on each visit within the validity of the visa which is for 12 months from the date of grant.

So what are you waiting for? Enjoy frolicking in the sand or submerge in clear blue waters, under a clear blue sky, avail of a tourist visa to Australia and spend your holiday vacation among the Australians!

Picture an entire continent filled with unique and exciting adventures. Now think of urbane and tolerant cities, perfect for the gay traveler. Imagine vacationing in a land of wonders so diverse, with settings (both natural and manmade) so magnificent, it truly boggles the mind.

Australia offers the gay traveler an impressive and welcoming destination unlike any other in the world. It is no wonder gay couples and singles are heading “Down Under” for the experience of a lifetime.

In Australia, if you can dream it, you can do it! Consider visiting the native aboriginal culture. Journey into the Outback, where you can rough it; visit Kings Canyon, Kakadu National Park and the Devil’s Marbles. Or how about taking a nature tour for up-close study of koalas, kangaroos and whales? Gay travelers can visit the beautiful sandy beaches and enjoy scuba diving, sunbathing, boating, and glorious relaxation.

Throughout Australia, the pristine and breathtaking scenery is awe-inspiring.

Tourists from around the globe flock to Australia to experience its beauty. Miles and miles of untouched wilderness await you, along with mountains and brilliant beaches.

Australia is home to one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world: Sydney. From the grandeur of the Sydney Opera House to boho galleries and fine dining; from the North and South Coast beaches to tropical environments…in Sydney, the gay traveler is just steps away from action and new experiences at every turn. Museums, art galleries, zoos, gourmet dining, first-rate shopping, spas and sporting events-these are just a few of the diversions you can find in this historic city. Be sure to grab a copy of the Sydney Star Observer (Sydney’s gay newspaper) for information on the local scene, including nightlife and clubs.

For gay travel that includes driving, consider embarking on the Pacific Coast Touring Route and take in the lush and quaint scenery.

But remember, Australians drive on the left side of the road! If that sounds too sedate, you can get your heart pumping during various water sports, such as river rafting or kayaking.

Since Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are “opposite” from those we experience in North America. In general, Australia’s coastal regions are warm and humid, while the interior regions are desert-like and dry, with blistering temperatures in the daytime that dip to freezing at night.

Finding suitable accommodations in Australia is a breeze, with many gay-and-lesbian-owned hotels open for business. The discerning traveler can choose from the most luxurious four-star experience to less expensive digs. There are hotels and apartments to fit all budgets, in addition to hostels and camping.

Article by Lena Hawthorne

One of the things you can do when you have a cheap travel insurance plan is take the Ghan across the outback and through the heart of this great country. This journey by train will take you from one edge of the continent, to the outback, and then to the other end. As you spend three days aboard the train, you will discover how diverse the landscape is. Witness it change from lush, sub-tropic environments to mystical, barren deserts.

The Ghan, then known as the Port Augusta to Government Gums Railway, was started in 1878 and was eventually finished in 1929. The new one that people who take out Australia travel insurance to ride was completed in the early 1980s and is located approximately 160 kilometres west of the old line. The reason for the relocation of the track was to prevent washout due to the rains and also to lessen travel time.

Running twice weekly, the train operates between Adelaide, Alice Springs, and Darwin on the Adelaide-Darwin railway. The reason why the ride is called the Ghan is due to the fact that it is the shortened version of the Afghan Express. The nickname was given to the express passenger service of the Commonwealth Railways in 1923 by one of the crews who worked on the train line. It was given in honour of the Afghan camel drivers who first came to Australia in the late 19th century to help carve out new paths into the then unexplored interior of the country.

Before you hop aboard the Ghan, you will want to make sure that you get an Australia travel insurance plan. A very good reason for getting one is in case you eat something that does not agree with your stomach and you need to be brought to the nearest hospital, the train will have to make a stop somewhere along the way and you will need the services of an ambulance to take you there. Having travel insurance assures you that you will get the necessary medical attention.

Another reason why you need this is in case one of your personal belongings gets left behind at the train station. What if you had left behind by accident a bag that contained your digital single lens reflex camera? If this happened, then you would not have anything to take pictures of the marvellous sights along the way. A cheap travel insurance plan can replace your camera at the end of your journey. While you may have lost your camera, you can take comfort in the fact that its full value will be refunded to you because you were prepared.

One final reason why an Australia travel insurance plan can help you out is in case you miss your train. This has happened to many people before, for one reason or another. They end up getting to the station late or they have to cancel for personal reasons, like a death in the family. Having cheap travel insurance can help you get a refund on your tickets and get them rescheduled for a later date. This will help you get through an already difficult situation.

Riding the Ghan can be one of the most thrilling adventures you can make while you are touring Australia. Make sure you have an Australia travel insurance plan that will protect you as you go on this iconic journey.

Article by Kate Taylor

The breath-taking scenery of the Great Ocean Road, in Victoria, Australia, has been a key factor in the huge popularity of this part of Australia’s southern coastline. Located to the west of Melbourne, the road is easily accessible to tourists and with a wealth of stunning natural attractions, from the Twelve Apostles to London Bridge, there is plenty to inspire visitors to this beautiful region.

The Twelve Apostles

The iconic Twelve Apostles have been created over millions of years by the continuous erosion of the limestone cliffs. Once part of the mainland, now the Twelve Apostles sit isolated from the shore, rising out of the Southern Ocean up to 45 metres high. For particularly awe-inspiring views, visit at sunrise or sunset and watch the rocks change colour as they move from darkness into light and back again. Parks Victoria has set up plenty of boardwalks and viewing areas to ensure visitors get spectacular views of these majestic rock stacks at any time of day.

The Grotto

The churning waters of the Southern Ocean offer a sharp contrast to the clear, still waters of The Grotto. This geological wonder was created over thousands of years – a result of sinkholes in the cliffs being exposed after the rock was gradually worn away.

London Bridge

Visitors to London Bridge just over 20 years ago would have found a large, natural archway and tunnel waiting for them. In 1990, however, the middle portion of this archway collapsed leaving a partially complete bridge. A helicopter flight is an inspiring way to see this natural wonder. Marvel at it from above while on the way to the Bay of Islands, or as part of a scenic flight along the whole of the Shipwreck Coast. 12 Apostles Helicopters is a recommended choice for an airborne adventure of this nature.

Australia is a land of contrasts – topographical, cultural, physical, meterological and visual. About 40,000 years ago, the Aborigines were the first to settle. They lived as hunters and gatherers for this entire time, living with a close link to nature, although backburning and other poor agricultural techniques have since been realised to have caused significant deforestation, salinification of the soil and elimination of much of the natural diversity of the landscape. Such a poor ability to interact with nature, despite it being so important, helps explain why much of Australia is now unsuitable for sustaining life. Interestingly, this provides one of the few examples of where the native population damaged the land more than later waves of settlers. Their way of living developed into a complex culture based on oral tradition and intricate social bounds, which was almost destroyed by the second wave of settlers, who were able to populate the land with much more success.

One of the states is the island state Tasmania of which one fifth is World Heritage area.

Each state has its own national parks with their specific character where you can indulge in bush-walking or maybe even rock-climbing. When you’re interested in the miracles of water-world, you can’t miss out on the Great Barrier Reef on the east coast, the main reason for many travellers to visit Cairns. The Wet Tropics of Queensland comprise dense rainforests and foaming waterfalls. Rare species of animals can be spotted in the famous Kakadu National Park as well as ancient aboriginal art. These old drawings can also be seen in the Namadgi National Park.

Good places to set off for exploration of the great outdoors are big cities such as Canberra, Darwin, Adelaide and Perth, that all have interesting sights and a good cultural atmosphere as well. Of course, Australia is surrounded by sea, so good swimming and surfing beaches are more rule than exception, generally these beaches will be full of only tourists, especially during the week. So fun can be had watching people who haven’t heard of sunscreen yet turning into lobsters, or getting trapped in the surf. North of Brisbane, is the Sunshine Coast one of the many stretches of coast where you can find excellent beaches, South of Brisbane is the better known Gold Coast, famous for being home to Australias equivalent of trailer park people and teenagers who can’t afford a holiday somewhere better. Don’t forget the smaller historically interesting Alice Springs, or William Creek [the most isolated town in Australia] that will lead you right to the famous Ayers Rock.

Deserts, rainforests, big cities….and just when you thought you’d caught a glimpse of the versatile character of this fascinating continent, you forgotten about Melbourne and the excellent skiing opportunities in the Alpine National Park.
