People tend to mistakenly think that espresso refers to the bean that the coffee is brewed from. Espresso can be brewed from any coffee beans. There are roasting companies who claim that their beans are the best for espresso but it still boils down to a marketing tool. You can make espresso from any bean of any roast.

Although there isn’t any one specific bean that is necessary for making espresso, there are espresso enthusiasts who favor one roasting method over another and one that combines the two.

One school of thought concerning the bean roast for espresso prefers the darker roasts. Darker styles tend to be sweeter and tend to leave a less acidic taste in the espresso. Beans that are dark roasted have more body, chocolate, bitters and other caramel like flavors that are a result of the high temperatures. Espressos made from dark roasted beans create the flavors that most people associate with an espresso shot.

On the other side of the coin there are those professional espresso brewers who favor the lighter roasted beans. This train of thought believes that the lighter roasting process maximizes the inherent characteristics of the bean itself.

This roasting process results in espressos that have a vast array of flavor traits, such as citrus, pectin, floral and more. The lighter roasting preserves these characteristics while higher roasting temperatures that create dark roasts burn them off.

Of course, there are those who prefer to combine the two roasts to come up with what they consider to be the best of both schools.

Geographic Regions

The coffee beans used to brew espresso is dependent on the geographic region where you happen to be getting the espresso. In the States, darker or French roast beans tend to be used on the West Coast. On the East Coast you would find espresso made with lighter roasted beans.

If you were to travel to the birthplace of espresso, Italy, you would find a similar situation. The roast of the bean used would be dependent on what region you are in. Southern Italians prefer the darker roasts while traveling north brings you to areas that prefer to use a lighter roast.

Pre-Ground or Whole

Once you have decided on light or dark roast beans you have half the battle won. Next, you have to decide if you are going to use pre-ground or whole beans. And, if you use pre-ground, you also have the option of using pre-filled coffee pods.

If you choose to go with coffee beans you will have to be prepared to grind the beans. It’s a little more work, but many people think the flavor is more intense. You also have more control over the grind.

However, if you are like the majority of people you will be buying pre-ground coffee. You can buy pre-ground loose coffee and use the tamper to make your espresso or you can purchase coffee pods. Pre-packaged pods are coffee that has been finely ground and packaged in little pods for your espresso maker. If you choose to use the pods, make sure they will fit your machine.

Another option is to purchase and grind the coffee beans at your local market. This allows you to know that they were freshly ground and not months old and you can select the grind that you want.

Espresso is a term for a type of coffee drink, not a specific coffee bean. The flavor of the espresso is dependent on the coffee bean chosen and the roast that was used for the coffee bean. Experiment with different ones to see which one you prefer.

The beverage industry is a major money making enterprise with many competing advertising messages aimed at the consumer on a daily basis. All beverages including coffees, teas, sodas and bottled water are marketed around a major ingredient – caffeine or no caffeine. In the non-caffeine market segment, consumers will notice many terms used to describe the beverages such “decaffeinated”, “naturally decaffeinated”, and “caffeine-free”. As a general rule, beverages should only be considered “caffeine-free” if there was never any caffeine in the ingredients to begin with. This rules out all coffee beans and tea leaves because both contain caffeine in their unprocessed form. For coffee and tea lovers who do not want caffeine in their drink, they should pay attention to both natural variations in caffeine content of various teas and coffee (some have more and some have less) as well as the physical decaffeination process used to manufacture a specific coffee or tea product.

So far, there is no method of decaffeination that can remove 100% of the caffeine from coffee. The U.S. standard – which is, by the way, a “standard” and not a law – says that a beverage may be labeled “decaffeinated” if 97% of the caffeine content has been removed. Europe generally follows a higher standard which is closer to 99%, but still not foolproof. And beyond the manufacturers’ control, brewing methods and steeping times (length of time a tea bag is left sitting in your hot water cup) drastically affect the level of caffeine that you end up consuming.

Percentages are where thinking about the actual caffeine content of different types of coffee beans, roasts and teas can be useful. For example, Arabica beans normally contain roughly one-half the caffeine of Robusta beans. So whereas a Robusta brew may have 100 mg of caffeine and its decaffeinated equivalent 3 mg, the equal serving of Arabica brew would contain about 50 mg of caffeine and 1.5 mg in the decaf version. Teas also have naturally lower caffeine content than coffee – of any variety. Once you read about the industrial methods of extracting caffeine from a coffee bean, you may want to carefully consider the beverage products you choose.

Misleading Information

A web search of “coffee decaffeination” or “decaffeination processes” will produce many conflicting, confusing, uninformed/incorrect and sometimes purposely misleading results. With so many consumer dollars at stake, and the sordid historical origins of chemical decaffeination (more later) beverage producers do everything they can to reassure consumers that their beverages are safe and healthy. While there is a kernal of truth in most labels, decaf products labeled “naturally decaffeinated” and “water processed” are particularly misleading. The two methods and four agents of decaffeination help to explain why.

Direct vs. Indirect

Contrary to what you will read, there are both direct and indirect methods of chemical, water, carbon and liquefied carbon dioxide processing agents. The terms “direct” and “indirect” do not tell the consumer anything about whether or what kinds of solvents, chemicals or reagents are used to decaffeinate the product. Direct and indirect refers to whether the chemical, water or carbon dioxide solutions come into direct contact with the coffee beans. Indirect processing methods steam the beans, collect and condense the steam and then remove the caffeine from the condensed water by either solvents or carbon-based filtering – thus the beans themselves are not soaked in the solution. After caffeine is separated (by any of the above methods) from the coffee extract, the concentrated liquid containing coffee solids and flavors are soaked back in to the coffee beans. This is why many people claim that decaf has less taste or quality from unadulterated coffee.

Chemical vs. “Natural”

There are currently four types of decaffeination processes: 1) solvent based; 2) charcoal or carbon filtered; 3) “supercritical” carbon dioxide; and 4) triglycerides, a process developed within the last 5 years. All of these processes are performed on green coffee beans before they are roasted.

A point of clarification: you will read a lot about “water-based” processes, but every single method of decaffeination named above uses water in the process. One should therefore not assign any weight to the term “water processed” with one exception, which is the Swiss Water Process that is in fact a specific, patented carbon activated filter method.

Solvent based decaffeination is the earliest and most controversial way to remove caffeine from coffee or tea. Its inventor first used benzene as the separation agent. As benzene began to be recognized as a health hazard, it was replaced by TCE, another controversial industrial solvent. By the 1970’s and 1980’s, TCE was replaced by the chemical methylene chloride which has many advantages but is still suspected of having some carcinogenic risk. Today most processors use only ethyl acetate as a decaffeination solvent.

It is important to note that some producers claim ethyl acetate as “all natural” or “naturally decaffeinated” because the chemical compound does occur naturally in many fruits and vegetables. But the quantity of chemical required for industrial decaffeination means that almost 100% of the time, synthetically manufactured ethyl acetate is used. So far, there are no known health risks linked to the use of ethyl acetate in direct or indirect decaffeination methods.

Charcoal and carbon filtering processes were developed as a direct challenge to solvent-based methods. Using only water, coffee elements are extracted from the beans, filtered through carbon or charcoal to remove the caffeine, and then the extract is replaced back to the bean. The patented Swiss Water Process is touted as a superior method for preserving flavor, because it throws away the first batch of beans and uses the decaffeinated coffee extract to wash and filter the next batch of beans, and so forth. Basically the difference is they are not using pure water to filter the beans, they are using “flavor charged” water that is already saturated with flavor ingredients so only caffeine moves from the beans to the water. Thus there is no re-soaking or re-infusing removed flavor back into the coffee bean, because the flavor has not been removed.

Supercritical carbon dioxide fluid has both gas-like and liquid-like physical properties. You many have also heard of superheated or liquefied gas. Supercritical fluid fills the container like a gas, but can dissolve substances like a liquid – making it an excellent agent for separating an element such as caffeine from a coffee bean. The highly pressurized carbon dioxide is forced through the beans and penetrates deeply, dissolving up to 99% of the caffeine. The carbon dioxide residue evaporates from the coffee beans as they return to room temperature.

Any finally, the newest method of decaffeination uses triglycerides from spent coffee grounds to extract caffeine from raw coffee beans. The beans are soaked in a hot water solution to draw the caffeine to the surface of the beans. Then they are transferred to another container and immersed in coffee oils that were obtained from spent coffee grounds. The coffee oils contain triglycerides, which when heated for several hours at a high temperature, separate the caffeine – but supposedly not the flavor – from the beans. The beans are next separated from the oils and dried. The caffeine is removed from the oils, which are reused to decaffeinate another batch of beans.

All of these decaffeination processes adulterate the natural coffee bean in some way because they are extracting elements from the essence of the bean or tea leaf. While some methods claim to be better or safer than others, the processes are similar, and it can be tough for the consumer to discern which actual method is being used. Decaf drinkers should read product packages carefully and possibly contact the manufacturer to ask about which method they use.

Another alternative is again, just choosing a beverage with low caffeine content to begin with. Modify your intake and brewing methods to preserve flavor while lowering your caffeine exposure. One promising development for the future is the discovery of the enzyme that produces caffeine in the coffee plant itself. Scientists have discovered coffee varieties in Ethiopia containing a small fraction of the caffeine of traditional coffee. Further they are working on developing the enzyme into a commercial way to grow bioengineered, caffeine-free coffee. In the mean time, enjoy your coffee!

The popularity of coffee is evident in the forever changing inventions and innovations designed to improve the taste and the whole coffee making experience. Coffee makers over the last forty years have progressed at an extraordinary rate, and the choice available today is astonishing.

We will start in the 1960s with the percolator, which boiled the water until a build up of pressure sent it up and over the coffee grounds. Most people will understand that boiling water and coffee is not a good combination. Add to this the fact that the coffee grounds were used multiple times and you will understand the taste produced was not ideal. However the percolator remained the height of sophistication until the mid seventies, with the advent of the filter method.

This was a cheaper alternative to the percolator and vastly improved the taste of the resulting drink. A couple of spoons of coffee grounds were placed on filter paper and just off the boil water slowly passed over them and through the paper, dripping into a glass jug below. Developments in this particular method included ready made coffee and filter paper sachets in various shapes, and adjustments to the filter machines to ensure the even spread of water over all the grounds.

The 1990s saw the advent of the espresso maker in the US. Already a favorite in Europe, the fashionable strong dark liquid became a popular after dinner treat and various machines were introduced to make the perfect espresso. The basic principle is similar to the percolator, with pressurized hot water forced through the coffee grinds and up into a container, it is the grinds themselves that are different. Espresso is made from a finely ground dark roast, producing a distinctive flavor. The addition of frothy warm milk to espresso to produce either a cappuccino or latte meant further expansion of the coffee maker industry and made coffee available to a wider variety of tastes.

A simple coffee making method that graces many European dining tables is the plunger. The coffee is placed in a glass jug, and nearly boiling water added to it. A filter that fits perfectly inside the jug, and has a long rod like handle, the length of the jug, extending above it, is placed in the top. The grounds are allowed to steep in the water for a few minutes before the filter is pushed down through the jug, collecting the grinds at the base and leaving a rich liquid that can be poured straight into a waiting coffee cup.

Although we may feel coffee making is a new and fashionable phenomena, it is worth noting that coffee has been around for at least two and a half thousand years. Methods of brewing the coffee grounds can be traced back to this time, and one of the oldest must be the Ibrik, a Turkish invention. Water was placed in a copper container and the ground coffee added directly. The strong drink was poured from the container with most of the grounds being caught by grooves in its lip.

However you choose to make your perfect brew, the range of coffee makers on the market today will guarantee a stylish addition to your kitchen or dining area. Don’t be afraid to experiment to be sure your chosen machine produces coffee suitable to your tastes before you make that purchase.

While coffee-based beverages remain as popular as ever, more Americans are looking for a do-it-yourself way to enjoy high-end coffee bar style cappuccino and espresso drinks at home. Fortunately, there are many affordable products on the market to assist the home brewing enthusiast in their quest for the ultimate coffee concoction. Regardless of which product you choose, there are endless recipes and combinations of ingredients to literally spice up your daily infusion.

First you need choose the basis of your beverage: coffee or espresso. Coffee can be drip-brewed, percolated, instant or cold-pressed. Any of these methods are very inexpensive. An espresso-based beverage is more likely to satisfy the sophisticated palette of the coffee connoisseur. To do this at home however, requires more of an investment in the brewing equipment. Real espresso machines cost upwards of $1,000. An affordable and popular alternative are the single-serving type of machines such as the Tassimo, where you invest in the machine and purchase pre-portioned packages of espresso varieties to brew a serving at a time.

Still confused about the difference between coffee and espresso? Espresso is a method, first originated in Italy, of extracting flavor from the heart of the coffee bean. The technique employs a pump-driven machine to force hot water through the ground coffee beans at high pressure in a short time frame — usually between 20 and 35 seconds. The amount of water used is only about ¾ of an ounce, and the resulting taste is described as smooth, thick, rich or sweet. So the obvious differences between coffee and espresso are 1) the amount of water used and 2) brewing or pressing time. Coffee is generally brewed for 4 to 6 minutes depending on the method and individual preferences.

Cappuccino is espresso mixed with equal parts of steamed and frothed milk. If you don’t purchase an espresso machine with milk-steaming capabilities, you will have to steam and froth your milk the old-fashioned way — on a stove. The frothing process involves skimming and stirring the hot milk. To layer the milk and espresso, allow the freshly frothed milk a moment to rest and separate (foam on top and milk on the bottom). Pour the steamed milk into your cup first, then pour in the espresso, and top it with the frothed milk using a spoon.

The creative possibilities go on from there. One of the most popular twists on the cappuccino is adding a sprinkle of powdered cocoa or cinnamon. Other combinations take their inspiration from favorite foods such as traditional desserts or candy bars. Try these super-easy recipes or experiment with making your own!

Milky Way Cappuccino– 2 shots espresso, 1 shot chocolate syrup, 1 shot caramel

Java Chai Espresso — 1 shot espresso, prepared chai concentrate, steamed milk, ½ ounce almond syrup

Cafe Corretto — 2 shots espresso, 1 shot brandy, cognac or flavored liqueur

Cafe Romano– 1 shot espresso, served with a twist of lemon or lemon peel

Rocky Road Cappuccino — 1 serving of your prepared cappuccino, 1 tablespoon hazelnut liqueur, 1 tablespoon chocolate sauce, 1 teaspoon of marshmallow crème and ¼ teaspoon finely chopped nuts

Butterscotch Creme Cafe — 1 serving coffee, 3 tablespoons butterscotch syrup, 2 tablespoons of half-and-half cream

Ginger Spiced Coffee — 1 serving coffee, 1 small piece finely chopped crystallized ginger, 1 cinnamon stick

Cafe Borgia — 1 cup coffee, 1 cup hot chocolate, 1 shot cream, sprinkle of grated orange peels

Chocolate Mint Truffle(for the non-coffee drinker) – 1 cup hot chocolate, 2 chocolate coated mint candies topped with 1 tablespoon whipped topping and 1 fresh mint sprig

Espresso Martini — 1 shot espresso cooled to room temperature, 1 shot premium vodka, 1 splash liqueur in flavor of your choice (try amaretto, Irish creme, Godiva chocolate or any favorite), garnish with 3 whole espresso beans

Mexican Coffee — your favorite brewed coffee, 2 cups whipped topping gently mixed with ¼ teaspoon nutmeg and ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

French Vanilla Coffee– your favorite brewed coffee, equal portion of milk heated to scalding temperature, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 cinnamon stick, sweetener to taste

If you are hosting a winter party and feeling a little adventurous, you may want to try a festive twist on the usual coffee and eggnog choices. Try this Betty Crocker recipe for 16 servings of Cappuccino Eggnog:

Ingredients — 6 eggs, slightly beaten; 2/3 cup table sugar; 1/8 teaspoon salt; 5 cups milk; 2 teaspoons vanilla extract; 2 cups hot espresso; 1 cup coffee liqueur or brandy; 2 cups heavy whipped cream; 2 tablespoons brown sugar; ground cinnamon

Directions — Stir together eggs, granulated sugar and salt in a Dutch oven pan. Gradually stir in milk. Cook over low heat 15 to 20 minutes, stirring constantly, just until mixture coats a metal spoon; remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Stir together coffee and liqueur. Gradually stir coffee mixture into egg mixture; keep warm. Just before serving, beat whipping cream and brown sugar in chilled large bowl with electric mixer on high speed until stiff. Gently stir 2 cups of the whipped cream into egg mixture. Pour into mugs. Top with dollops of remaining whipped cream. Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve immediately!

The Gaggia Titanium Espresso Machine is a complete coffee center all in one simple machine with classic looks and a sturdy design. This isn’t a cheap espresso maker that will tear up in two uses and have to be replaced. The Gaggia is made to last for many years and make hundreds of piping hot coffee drinks.

Starting with the secure and sturdy packing, the Gaggia begins to impress upon arrival. Its small size, 11.25 by 14.5 inches, allows plenty of room for coffee supplies and empty counter space.

The Gaggia comes complete with everything needed to get a cup of coffee ready except the coffee and water. Accessories include a coffee scoop, brush for cleaning the brew unit; frothing wand and automatic frothing attachment, water hardness test strip, wrench to remove the brew unit and a user manual.

Beverage of Choice

The Gaggia is push button operated and brews up the beverage of choice, either an espresso, a regular coffee, large coffee or water. Users can adjust the amount of coffee used to make the beverage, the temperature of the beverage and the volume of water dispensed when making the beverage.

Using the included frothing wand or the automatic frothing tool individuals can create lattes, cappuccinos and many other coffee based drinks that require the addition of steamed milk or frothed milk.

Reviews of the Gaggia all express how easy the Gaggia is to use and especially how simple the cleaning process is. Most reviewers love the push button operation along with the ability to customize three of the buttons.

Beans or Ground

The hopper holds a large amount of coffee beans with an airtight lid to keep them fresh. For those days when a special coffee is wanted or decaf is needed, the by-pass doser is handy and easy to use with pre-ground coffee and the included coffee scoop.

This feature is another that is often mentioned in reviews. Users don’t want the hassle of removing the beans from the hopper just to make one cup of coffee that is different from the hopper beans.

High atop everyone’s list of most haves is easy clean up. The Gaggia couldn’t be easier. Empty the dreg drawer and drip tray and rinse. Perform a weekly cleaning of the brew unit and this machine should last for years.

For a great espresso that is readily available anytime, the Gaggia is a must have for the kitchen.

Having a Starbucks in the kitchen might sound a bit extreme however that is just what owning a Gaggia Titanium SS Espresso Machine will seem like. No more treks to the corner coffee shop for that morning wake up java. The SS model of Titanium line raises the bar higher than before. This stainless steel version is a countertop work of art. Of course it features all the Gaggia Titanium Espresso Machine delights.

Style and Function

For a little extra money, the Titanium SS Espresso Machine arrives as a fully stainless steel unit, not just the front section. The packaging is as secure and sturdy as the other models with the basic footprint being the same. It won’t take up any more room than the other models. This one weighs a little more due to the stainless steel construction but not so much that it can’t be picked up.

Included in the box are a manual for using the machine, a coffee scoop for using the by-pass doser, a frothing wand a an automatic frothing attachment, a cleaning brush and a wrench for removing the front cover to access the brewing unit and also a hard water testing strip.

Additionally, the SS model can be found with added bonuses such as coffee beans and flavored syrups, not a standard accessory, but a bonus through some retailers.

The SS model didn’t leave out functionality. Starting with the 7 easy to use push button controls that make brewing a snap all the way to the easiest clean up a coffee maker could have, the SS model proves that beauty and brains. Functions include:

Many people have coffee makers but are curious what other types of coffee makers are available. Maybe you would like to try something new or your old coffee maker finally died and you need a good replacement. With hundreds of types of coffee maker on the market, you have many options available and are sure to find something that will suit your needs.

Before you buy a coffee maker you should figure out what exactly you want out of it. Are you a coffee addict who needs 10 cups a day or should you stick with a smaller single serve coffee maker? Do you need to grind your own beans and want a grinder built in? Do you want foam or options for espresso and cappuccino? Or, do you just want something cheap that will make coffee as easy as possible? These are just a few questions you should ask yourself before going to find a new coffee maker.

Naturally, the easiest and most common type of coffee maker is the automatic drip. This is where you put some water in the back or side, put in a filter, fill it with coffee, then push start. Its ease of use is one of the things that makes this type so appealing. These can make just one cup at a time or gallons at a time. It all depends on what you want to use it for. The only thing you really need to worry about is the type of coffee you want to put into it. Quality coffee beans can be ground at stores and they can even be infused with flavors you like such as hazelnut, vanilla, and cinnamon.

The second most popular type of coffee maker is the manual drip. This is just like the automatic drip except you heat up and pour the water yourself. You just pour it into the holder where the coffee filter filled with coffee sits. It drains into the pot and you are done. These also make either single cup or up to 12 cups but aren’t usually used commercially. For people who love fishing, hunting, and camping, these are a good choice as they are portable and you can heat the water however you want. You can use a stove, campfire, even a hot car engine is an option if you really need a cup of coffee immediately.

Espresso and cappuccino machines are more for a selective person who knows exactly what they like. Unlike a normal coffee maker, these are expensive and you need to practice to operate them efficiently. They utilize pressure, foam, froth, and milk depending on the type of machine you buy. Espresso and cappuccino are gaining popularity and these are becoming smaller and more affordable than ever before.

In addition to these, there are many other types of coffee maker you may be interested in. There are old fashioned percolators, vacuum brewers, French presses, and much more available if you choose to look around. You can find anything you are looking for either on line or at a local retailer.
